FEDERAL LABOUR
VIEWS ON REPRESENTATION IN LONDON MINISTER FOR WAR CABINET. WITH PREMIER REMAINING IN AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The “Herald’s” Canberra correspondent says it is known that Mr J. Curtin (Leader of the Labour Opposition) will not attempt to persuade the Labour caucus to accept Cabinet’s recommendation that Mr Menzies should go to London. It is believed, however, that Mr Curtin will advocate the representation of Australia in the British War Cabinet by an Australian Minister other than the Prime Minister. It is thought there is a fair chance of the caucus agreeing to this. If it did, the Government would be left to choose a Minister qualified to express the Australian viewpoint. There is a feeling that such a Minister, if selected, might prove to be Mr Menzies himself. In that event. Mr Menzies would have to resign the Primo Ministership. However, before a Minister could be sent usefully to London, an agreement would be necessary wi.h the British Government that he would be entitled to sit in the War Cabinet. Although Mr Menzies has declared that it is wrong to assume that an Australian Minister other than the Prime Minister would automatically be given a seat in the War Cabinet, a substantial majority of members of Parliament appear to believe that there could be no likelihood of Britain rejecting a request by Australia for a seat in the British War Cabinet for any, representative who might be sent.
