PACIFIST TEACHERS

POSITION OF BOARD SAID TO BE UNSATISFACTORY. DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON MINISTER. (By Tel *ranh—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Two motions dealing with pacifist teachers caused a long discussion at yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Education Board, which decided to wait on the Minister of Education and place before him the unsatisfactory position the board found itself in when forced to deal with complaints about teachers who were conscientious objectors. The first motion, by Mr S. C. Hyndman, “that all teachers selected for appointment in the board’s district be required to state if they are conscientious objectors or members of any pacifist society," was withdrawn. Since the motion had been framed, said Mr Hyndman, the Government had introduced machinery ■ to deal with the position. Mr T. K. Moody then moved “that no school teacher be appointed to any position which carries a higher salary than at present received, or be raised in status, who has lodged an appeal from military service as a conscientious objector, pacifist, or the like, irrespective of whether or not the appeal has been upheld.” Mr C. H. W. Nicholls moved that the matter contained in the motion be deferred till the Government’s promised legislation had come forward. Later Mr Nicholls agreed to withdraw his amendment in favour of one by Mr W. V. Dyer as follows: "That the Minister of Education be asked to receive a deputation from the board, with the object of placing before him the unsatisfactory position with which the board is confronted when forced to deal with complaints relating to teachers who are conscientious objectors.” The motion was carried.
