SOLDIERS ON LEAVE

ENTERTAINED AT DINNER. GATHERING IN MIDLAND HOTEL. Men of the reinforcements now on leave were entertained last evening at a dinner at the Midland Hotel, presided over by Mr T. Jordan, chairman of the Masterton District Patriotic Committee. There were also present representatives of the Masterton Borough and County Councils, the R.S.A., and the Rev J. Davie. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr J. Robertson. M.P., owing to Parliamentary business. In welcoming those present, the chairman said he was greatly impressed by the fine type of New Zealand soldier represented by those present. He felt confident that, if called upon, they would worthily uphold the meritorious distinction New Zealanders had earned overseas, both in the last war and, more recently, in this war in Greece and Crete. He charged them to look after themselves and keep fit. Following the loyal toast, the toast of his Majesty's Forces was proposed by Mr H. J. Brass, president of the Wairarapa R.S.A. Mr Brass gave an interesting sketch of his first experiences under fire.

Captain Graham Cowie, in response, returned thanks to those who had promoted the happy gathering, and said they would do their best worthily to carry on the prestige of New Zealand forces on active service.

Private McGregor and Corporal Welch also spoke. The toast of the chef was drunk with musical honours.
