MR CHURCHILL’S WELCOME

HOME

STATION PACKED WITH PEOPLE.

GRATITUDE TO THE NAVY.

(Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright i '(Received This Day. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON. August 19.

Amazing scenes marked Mr Churchill's arrival in London. When the train pulled into the station the official party, comprising generals, admirals, air marshals and leading members of the Cabinet, led fit Mis Churchill, ran down the platform to greet Mr Churchill. Every vantage point overlooking the platform was thronged with people. Mr Churchill's first words were: “It is good to be back in London again." Mr Alexander (First Lord of the Admiralty) was greeted by Mr Churchill with the remark: "You have done it very well,” in a tribute to the way in which the Navy had carried him safely on his historic journey. Mr Alexander replied: “The Royal Navy was proud to carry you, but your safe return has taken a load off my mind.” Terrific cheers swelled around them as the official party crossed the station. Mr Churchill time and time again raised his cap in acknowledgement. The crowd in the station was so great that traffic had to be held up and a passage cleared for Mr Churchill's car.

Mr Fraser (New Zealand Premier) was among the party which met Mr Churchill. He received a hearty handshake as he congratulated Mr Churchill on his achievement. Mr Fraser later attended a War Cabinet meeting.

His Majesty the King saw, at the Ministry of Information, a private showing of the film depicting the meeting of President Roosevelt and Mr Churchill. The time of Mr Churchill’s broadcast on Sunday will be 9 p.m.. British Standard time. This afternoon Mr Churchill, accompanied by Mrs Churchill, witnessed a private showing at the Ministry of Information of the film of his meeting with President Roosevelt.
