BURMA ROAD
CARRYING HUGE VOLUME OF TRAFFIC IN SPITE OF JAPANESE BOMBING. AMERICAN EXPERT'S REPORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, August 19. The Chungking correspondent of the “New York Times” says that the potential capacity of the Burma Road is far in excess of the usual estimates of 30.000 tons of goods a month, according to Mr Daniel Arnstein, an American truck operator who has completed a survey of the road for the United States Government. Mr Arnstein declared that it is a good road and its capacity is practically unlimited. Asphalting is now beginning and is expected to be well advanced by the end of the year. It is expected that 7000 American trucks will operate on the road shortly.
Mr Arnstein added that the Chinese chauffeurs are good drivers. The Japanese bombing has not appreciably affected the road traffic, and the vital bridges arc still in use.
