PERSONAL ITEMS

Miss Irving, of Masterton, is on a visit to Palmerston North. Mrs A. Heweson was the guest of Mrs J. McNab, of Tokomaru. Miss Daphne Eilers, Wairarapa, was a weekend visitor to the Chateau Tongariro.

Miss B. L.. Clark, Matron of the Wellington Hospital, was the guest recently of her sister, Mrs L. S. Nicol, "Redwoods,” Upper Plain.

A cousin of the famous statesman, Sir Robert Peel, and a resident of the Dominion for the past 72 years, Mrs Charles Wootton has died at the age of 90 at the residence of her daughter, Mrs A. V. Bilkey, Mangere, Auckland. Mrs Wootton was born in 1851 at Bamber Bridge, Lancashire. In 1868 she left England with her mother and sisters in the sailing ship Royal Dane, and arrived at Auckland after a voyage of five months to join her brothers.

The Masterton Post Office staff assembled yesterday afternoon to make a presentation to Miss G. E. Pither, who has resigned from the staff in view of her approaching marriage. Mr' M. M. Simpson. Postmaster, on behalf of the gathering, presented Miss Pither with a silver hot water jug and in doing so, wished her happiness in her future life. Mr W. H. King, supervisor of the clerical branch, referred to the excellent services rendered to the department by Miss Pither during her appointment, which extended over 51 years. Other speakers were Mr J. F. Donnelly, supervisor of the telegraph branch, and Miss N. F. Page, senior shorthand writer.
