DIRECTED AGAINST LENINGRAD
Critical Position in Estonia
RUSSIAN LOSSES IN UKRAINE
SERIOUS BUT NOT CATASTROPHIC
LONDON. August 18. The latest news of the fighting in Russia shows that the Germans have begun a new drive towards Leningrad, in which they are developing a pincer movement. Reports from various centres not yet confirmed give some indication of the move by which the Nazis are making their latest attempt to reach Russia’s heavily-defended northern bastion. They are said to be making a two-jpronged thrust, one from the west and the other from the south. From the west the Germans are advancing along the Estonia Baltic coast and from the south they are trying’ to cover the right flank of the Estonian drive. _ Some units of the two movements are reported to have already joined up and if this is so, it means that Russian forces in Estonia have been cut off. Up to now, Russian guerilla troops in Estonia have given the Germans great trouble and there is no doubt that strong Russian forces still hold portions of the Estonian coast, including the capital, Tallin. There is little fresh news of the fighting in the Ukraine. If the Russian forces retreat across the River Dneiper, it is stated, they will'find strong defences already prepared for a determined stand. The Russians do not attempt to minimise the serious set-back suffered by the loss of Nikolaev and KrivoiRog but it is not nearly as catastrophic as the Germans are pretending.
