BOOKMAKING CHARGES
THREE MEN FINED,

PALMERSTON N„ August 18
Fines totalling £425 were imposed by Mr Lawry, S.M.. in the Magistrates’ Court, Palmerston North, today on John Bruce Clark, Ernest James Watson and Alonzo Parsons, who pleaded guilty to carrying on business as bookmakers. Police evidence showed that Clarke had three telephones installed at his home, and that on one day 195 bets had been recorded. He had been previously convicted in 1938, 1939 and 1940, the fines on the latter two occasions totalling £2OO. Watson also had previous convictions, fines of £lOO being imposed in 1938. 1939 and 140. There were two telephones in his home, and material found revealed bets totalling £4B 10s. Parsons, against whom nothing was previously known, had transactions of betting amounting to £3l ss. Clarke and Watson were each fined £2OO. and Parsons £25.
