FAILURE TO REPORT
FOR MILITARY SERVICE FARMER BROTHERS SENT TO GAOL. CASES AT DARFIELD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 15. A plea that they should be given the benefit of new regulations not yet gazetted providing for the establishment of detention camps for conscientious objectors was made by three Darfield brothers who were charged before Mr H. Young, S.M., in Darfield today with having failed to report to the military authorities in accordance with the Gazette notice and the National Emergency Regulations. They were Kenneth Edgar Adams, Raymond Leslie Adams and Thomas Allen Adams, farmers, Darfield. Each pleaded not guilty and the cases were heard separately. “There is no reason that I am aware of why these cases should not be disposed of by me here and now,” said the magistrate, in passing sentence. Each defendant is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three 1 months or to a fine of not more than £5O. This is not a case for a fine. Each defendant will be sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour in Paparua jail.”
