POWERFUL AUSTRALIAN REINFORCEMENTS
LARGEST SINCE OUTBREAK OF WAR. JAPAN DENIES TENSION WITH RUSSIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 15. It is officially staled in Singapore that powerful forces of Australian army reiforeeinents have arrived. They are described as the largest since 1 he outbreak of the war. The Tokio correspondent of the United Press of America says it is confirmed that clashes on the ManchukuoSoviet border have been continuing, but they have been fewer. It will be possible to complete the scheduled demarcation soon, signifying good relations between Japan and Russia. The spokesman of the Japanese Cabinet Information Board. It was announced in Tokio that a national sales tax. called a consumption tax will be imposed on October 1 on liquors, sugar, textiles, refreshments, amusements, and luxuries, including jewellery. The authorities said that the measure is designed to absorb purchasing power.
