MORE BREACHES

OF SYRIAN ARMISTICE TERMS COMMITTED BY THE VICHY AUTHORITIES. SIR H. M. WILSON’S PROTEST. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) CAIRO, August 14. The British Cotnmander-in-Chief in Syria, General Sir Henry Maitland Wilson, has vigorously protested against three breaches of the Syrian Armistice Convention. They are first, that General Dentz denounced as deserters French soldiers who exercised their option of joining the Free French forces; secondly, that the Vichy authorities summarily removed to an embarkation port the families and baggage of many who were awaiting their chance to join the Free French; thirdly, that the Vichy authorities sold a considerable quantity of war materials to civilians after the convention was signed. These breaches are distinct from the bad faith for which General Dentz has been detained (the transfer to, Germany of Allied officers who had’ been taken prisoner). There are also numerous instances of obstruction. Gendarmes arrested 50 Vichy soldiers at Tripoli who were intending to join the Allies. The Allies were compelled to arrest the gendarmes and liberate the soldiers.
