Training College Tournament.

The annual tournament -oelween Auckland and Wellington Teachers’ Training Colleges was continued at Auckland yesterday. Auckland won the Rugby contest, 8-3. Auckland also won the ladies’ hockey match, 4-1. A draw, 3 all, was registered in the Soccer game. Relations With Russia. ’

Preliminary arrangements Have Peen made for the holding of a meeting in the Auckland Town Hall by the New Zealand Society for Closer Relations with Russia. An application was made yesterday on behalf of the Speaker cf the House of Representatives; Mr Barnard, and the member of Parliament for Nelson, Mr Atmore, for use of the hall on a date later in the month, and this was approved. Renown Collieries.

After providing £9962 for taxes, the net profit of Renown Colleries Limited for the year ended July 31 was £7lOO against £B6OO in 1940 and £7700 in 1939. The directors recommend the usual dividend of 7 per cent on preference shares and lOd a share, equal to 6 17-18 per cent, on ordinary shares, an unchanged rate. The dividends require £7lOO, thus absorbing the total profit. Bookmaker Fined.

A fine of £3O was imposed yesterday at the Dunedin S.M. Court on James Patrick Gorman on a charge of having carried on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Hall said he understood Gorman was a member of an unlawful association. The S.M., Mr H. W. Bundle: “I presume you refer to some bookmakers’ association.” DetectiveSergeant Hall: “They call it the National Sportsmen’s Association, or some such thing.” Expression of Thanks.

The Country Districts Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society wish to specially thank Mr J. A. Russell for his help in getting regulation cases ready for sending overseas, the masters, Messrs Tier, Drew and Stewart, and the boys of Wairarapa College, for making cases and carders, Messrs Allen, Whiteman and C. E. Daniell, Ltd., for timber, Mr Robie for making boxes, and Mr Dickason for weighing and forwarding the cases. With this valuable help twelve well-filled cases of warm clothing have been forwarded to Britain. Airmail Letters. The Postmaster-General, Mr Webb, stated yesterday that the volume of airmail letters for overseas destinations had increased to such an extent that the carrying capacity of the aircraft available was becoming seriously taxed. He therefore requested users of airmail services to restrict the weight of their letters. One way in which this could be done, the Minister suggested, was to use airmail writing paper and envelopes in place of ordinary writing paper. The position was so serious, Mr Webb said, that correspondents using airmails were urged to give heed to this request.

Union Officials Resign. Since Thursday’s announcement that Mr H. Barnes had been elected president of the, Auckland branch of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union in succession to Mr T. Solomon, who has been appointed wharf superintendent, it is learned that the walking delegate, secretary and executive of the branch have resigned. They state that their action is dictated by a policy matter and not antagonism toward the new election. A ballot will be held to fill the vacancies next week. Labourer Sent to Gaol. An unauthorised drive in a motorcar on Thursday night resulted in George William Arthur Henderson, labourer, aged 23, being brought before the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, yesterday on charges of having converted the car to his own use, of having been drunk in charge of a car and of having driven a car without being the holder of a licence to drive. He pleaded guilty to each charge. Mr Luxford, S.M., sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment for car conversion, and on the other charges convicted and discharged.

Sunday Rail-Car i raffle. Referring to the position relating to Sunday evening rail-car traffic from Masterton . to Wellington, Mr J. Robertson, M.P., stated this morning that if, as soon as a soldier knew he was getting leave, he applied to the stationmaster at Trentham, to have a seat reserved on the Sunday night railcar, from the Wairarapa. this would be done.

Y.M.C.A. Card Party. At the fortnightly card party conducted by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. a most enjoyable time was spent. Ten games were played, the winners being Mrs Cunningham and Mr White. The next card party will be hold on August 28. Remuera Seat. Asked last night for his views on the decision of members of the Remuera electorate to ballot for a National Party candidate, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, said he had no comment to make. The five names to go to the ballot do not include that of the sitting member, Mr Endean, who, Mr Holland earlier announced, would contest the seat as the National candidate. Band Concert. Weather permitting, the Masterton Municipal Band will play a programme of popular music in the Park tomorrow, commencing at 2.30 o’clock. The programme will be as follows: —“The Middy,” “The Challenge,” “Marmion,” “There’ll Always be an England,” “Sons of the Old Contemptibles” (marches); “Sliders Hornpipe,” trombone solo, Bandmaster A. Pearson; “Plain and Gwarry,” hymn; “Esmeralda,” valse; “Nautical Melodies,” fantasia; “Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life,” waltz; “Playmates,” cornet duet, Band Sergeant R. Sayer and Bandsman R. Cottle; “The Boys Down Under” and “Maori Farewell” (novelty items).
