6791 CASUALTIES TO DATE
INCLUDING GO7 DEATHS. CAMPAIGN IN GREECE AND CRETE. No official indication of the losses suffered by the New Zealand Division in Greece and Crete, states the “New Zealand Herald,’’ has been issued since the estimate of 5783 was given by the Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, in the House of Representatives on June 11. about nine or ten days after the division’s arrival in Egypt from Crete. However, official lists published since the beginning of April give an approximate total of 6791 casualties among the 16,530 men who originally went to Greece. The total is made up as follows: —
The number shown as killed includes those killed in action, died of wounds, accidentally killed and died of sickness. Some men earlier presumed to have been killed in action, as a result of a court of inquiry, have since been found to be prisoners of war. The 1595 wounded are only those in safe hands. Many of the 2872 missing and 1717 prisoners have also been reported wounded, but they are not included in the wounded total in the : above table.
The approximate figures given here, taken from the biginning of April to date, may include a small number of casualties suffered in the Western Desert before the division left Egypt fol’ Greece.
