GERMAN CLAIMS TO SUCCESSES IN UKRAINE
Russian Army Not Encircled REPORTS CONSIDERABLY IN CONFLICT NAZIS ALLEGE LODGEMENTS ON BLACK SEA COAST LONDON, August 14. German claims to sweeping successes in the Ukraine have been bluntly denied in Moscow. The Russian Army, it is stated, is not encircled by the German forces. The statement in the Russian communique of last night that nothing of importance had occurred on any front meant that the Germans had been halted and could not advance.
The Germans claim to have reached the Black Sea coast cast of Odessa and state that the Russians have been forced to abandon the defence cf the Western Ukraine. Some Russian formations, they asserted, would be annihilated. Odessa was ringed by Rumanian troops and German and Bulgarian troops were east and west of Nikolaev. It is stated that the German army had reached its objective and since Hitler had gone up to the front line the campaign could be regarded as finished. The Russian Air Force keeps up its pressure on enemy forces. German papers continue to complain of the effectiveness of the Russian scorched-earth policy.
