Gaol for Theft of Seer. For the theft of a bottle of beer valued at Is 6d, the property of the Wellington Harbour Board, Frederick Warner, waterside worker, aged 54, was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment by Mi- Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, yesterday. Murder Charge. Having been remanded from Patea, Pipi Katene, labourer, aged 26, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday on a charge of murdering Arthur Harding Parkinson at Waitotara on August 4. On the application of De-tective-Sergeant W. McLennan, he was remanded to appear in Wellington on August 21. Mr'McLennan said that a further remand would probably be applied for then. National Savings Competition. The outstanding item in connection with the national savings flag competition during the fourteenth fortnightly period of the contest, which ended on August 7 was the attainment of 100 per cent success at three offices in the Invercargill district, namely, Edendale, Riverton and Waikaka. At each of these offices the number of depositors now equals the total population. No alteration in the positions of the leading towns in other districts is disclosed but increased percentages are recorded in each case for all districts. The leading town in the Palmerston North district is Pongaroa. and in the Wellington district. Featherston. Reserve Bank Profit. A net profit of £351,906, after provision for depreciation and contingencies, was earned by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for the year ended March 31, 1941, according to the annual report of the board of directors presented m the House of Representatives yesterday by the Ministre of Finance, Mr Nash. This amount has been paid into the Public Account to the credit of the Consolidated Fund. The net profit last financial-year was £361,363. The profit and loss account showed general charges, including salaries, rent, cost .of note issue and other expenses totalling £139,181. The balance of profit aftermaking provision for rebate on Treasury bills not yet due, and for sundry [liabilities and contingencies, amounted to £491,088.
Cheese for Britain. A survey has disclosed that .160,000 tons of cheese required by Britain from New Zealand is assured, according to a statement made by the chairman of directors of the Mangorei Co-operative Dairy Company, Mr A. Hall, yesterday. Mr Hall said he had received this information from the Director of the Dairy Division, Mr W. M. Singleton. Auckland Suburbs Seat. Preparations are being made for the holding of a ballot to select the candidate to contest the Auckland Suburbs seat in Labour’s interests at the next general election. The sitting member is Mr Mason, Minister of Education, and he will be opposed in the ballot by Mr J. Williams, secretary of the Suburbs Labour Representation Committee. Methodist Children’s Home.
