CARTERTON
COURT SITTING POLICE AND OTHER CASES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrates’ Court held in the Carterton Courthouse yesterday. Judgment for plaintiff was given in the following civil cases:—Jas Laurensovt v J. E. Beamish, claim £1 10s, by default, with 9s costs; Assigned Estate S. E. James v J. Hiscox, £ll 7s 4d, costs £2 17s. The police proceeded against Geo Benge, P. J. Beban and W. S. Dyer for being found on licensed premises, the Club Hotel, Carterton, on Friday, July 11. after closing hours. Each defendant, for whom Mr D. L. Taverner appeared, entered a plea of guilty. Each was fined £1 with 10s costs.
Arising out of these charges the licensee, C. E. Larsen, and Mrs Larsen, were fined £5 and costs 10s and £3 and costs 10s respectively. Robert W. Carter was charged by the police that on May 25, in Carterton, he had driven a motor vehicle on the Main Highway and had given false and misleading information to Traffic Inspector Nicholson, that his name and address was Leslie Moyhan, c/o W. Rayner, “The Cliffs,” Masterton. Defendant was fined £2 with 10s costs. Three other charges were brought against Carter, that on May 25 he failed to carry a warrant of fitness and on July 12 with not being the'holder of a motor driver’s licence for the current year and for failing to carry a warrant of fitness. He was fined 10s with 10s costs on each of the three charges.
H. A. J. Wilson was charged that on May 28, at Waingawa, in the vicinity of Norfolk Road, he drove a car without due care and attention. The case arose out of a collision between a motor cycle and defendant’s car. Defendant was fined £3, with costs 10s. For driving his car on July 19 in High Street, Carterton, without due care and attention, Thomas Jennings was fined £2 and costs 10s.
J. B. Johns was charged by the police that on July 26 he carried on business in Carterton as a second-hand dealer, not being the holder of a licence for the year 1941-42. He pleaded guilty and was fined 10s with costs 10s.
The Traffic Officer, Mr C. F. Nicholson, proceeded against Wm. Turnbull that, on June 15, he operated a car on the main highway, Carterton, without being the holder of a current motor driver’s licence. Defendant was fined 10s, with costs 10s.

Wairarapa friends of Mr A. L. Milner will be interested to hear that he has obtained his commission in the British Army. Lieut. Milner left for England nearly two years ago to visit his relatives and offer his services to the military authorities. He has been for some time attached to the Pioneer Corps. During a recent air raid on the Merseyside, his parents’ home was destroyed by a torpedo bomb. Card Tourney. The weekly card evening held under the jurisdiction of the Carterton Boy Scouts was held in the Bandroom last evening. The prizes were won by Mesdames Challis, J. Hooper, H. Hodder and Bradbury. Patriotic Committee. A meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee was held in the Council Chambers last evening, the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presiding. It was decided to hold a dance in the King’s Theatre on Monday, August 18, and that Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra be engaged. The Carterton Ladies’ Patriotic Committee yesterday forwarded a hamper
of provisions to the Y.M.C.A., A.N.A., and Y.W.C.A., Wellington, to be used for soldiers’ meals. These hampers are packed at . Mrs Stubbs’s vacant shop, High Street, every second Wednesday in each month. The committee would be pleased to accept donations of cakes, etc., from anyone desirous of helping, gifts to be left with Mrs Stubbs.
