SMASHING ATTACKS
MADE BY ROYAL AIR FORCE TARGETS IN ITALY & LIBYA. BIG TOTAL OF DAMAGE DONE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) RUGBY, August 13. R.A.F. attacks on enemy objectives, both in North Africa and in Italy, are announced in a R.A.F. Middle East communique, which states: ‘'R.A.F. bombing aircraft attacked several objectives in Cyrenaica during the night of August 11. Blenheims bombed both landing grounds and the dispersal area at Gazala. Cloud prevented an accurate observation of results. "At Bardia, military buildings were bombed and set on fire and the mole at Derna was straddled with bombs. R.A.F. bombers successfully attacked a chemical works at Krotonne, in Southern Italy, on August Tl. Many direct hits caused great damage to storage tanks and containers and the whole objective was a mass of flames when our aircraft left. Other bombers attacked and demolished military buildings at Caraiti. "Enemy aircraft flew over Malta during the night of August 11 and dropped bombs which did a small amount of damage. Our fighters intercepted and shot down two of the enemy planes. "During the same night, our bombers carried out a raid of long duration on the harbour of Tripoli. Buildings were destroyed and a persistent fire was started near the power house. Our aircraft, in addition, machinegunned enemy motor transport on the coast road in the neighbourhood. "One of our aircraft is missing from these operations.”
