BERLIN BOMBED
FOR FIFTH NIGHT IN SUCCESSION

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 13. In spite of bad weather, British bombers ranged far wide over Germany last night. Many bombs were dropped on Berlin and on industrial targets at Madgeburg. Hanover anti on Ihe Krupp works at Essen. The raid on Berlin lasted for two hours and when the airmen left a sullen red glow of fires could be seen over the city.
The aircraft were met by ' every defence the German capital possessed and the crews had some thrilling .stories to tell. At Essen a tremendous fire, half a mile long, was started in the armament works. Other towns attacked included Stettin, Kiel, Bremen, Osnabruck and Cologne. Aerodromes in Holland and docks at Le Havre were also bombed. Thirteen British bombers are missing. FIGHTER COMMAND ATTACKS. Fighter Command aircraft were also busy last night and strafed aerodromes in occupied territory. Aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm attacked shipping, harbours and aerodromes. The German people have been warned by a German spokesman to take last night’s raid as a foretaste of what is coming to them. As the season advanced, they were told, they could expect the number of British attacks to increase. WEAK RAIDS ON BRITAIN. One or two enemy aircraft dropped bombs in Britain today, a short distance inland from the north-east coast. No extensive damage was done and there were few casualties.

A feature of the Royal Air Force daylight offensive was the participation of twin-engined long-range Whirlwind fighters. It is believed to be the first time they have been on operations.
They are still on the secret list, but an American journal states that their Rolls Royce engines develop a speed of ovei' 400 miles an hour. Their armament includes a power driven turret. Other American reports suggest that the Whirlwind is superior to the latest Spitfire.
