ENEMY OUTLINE
OF EASTERN BATTLEFRONT. BLACK SEA TO GULF OF RIGA. LONDON, August 12. A reproduction of the latest ostensibly official German war map shows the Russian front from the Black Sea to the Gulf of Riga. It starts from the mouth of the Dniester (south of Oddessa) and makes a semi-circle round Odessa to the River Bug between Nikolayev and Voznesensk (50 miles to the north- 1 east), thence curving north-east to a level with Pervonaisk (a few miles below Olviopol), then back north-west to a point eastward of Uman, thence northward to where the front crosses the Pripet River and the PinskBryansk railway, when it sweeps in a curving through the railway between Smolensk and Vyazma back to Luki, following the Lovat River to southward of Lake Ilmen, then straight to a point north of Gdov (on the northeastern shore of Lake Peipus), after which it goes across Lake Peipus north-west to Tapa 50 miles east-south-east of Tallinn), and thence straight to Parnu (in the inlet 30 miles south of Tallinn). The Stockholm correspondent of “The Times” says that, judging from all available information, this map is approximately correct regarding the positions at ->*.e weekend. It is noteworthy that the line nowhere touches the Gulf of Finland, but shows Narua, Tallinn and Baltiski and also over half of Estonia still in Russian hands. It is necessary to remember, however, that no definite line exists, as the fighting zone is mostly 20 and frequently 100 miles deep.
