POWERFUL RESISTANCE
MAINTAINED BY RUSSIANS IN UKRAINE New Successes Claimed by Germans SOVIET CONFIDENT OF HOLDING INDUSTRIAL AREAS DEVASTATION OF EVACUATED TERRITORY LONDON, August 13. , Today’s news from the Eastern front shows that while the Germans appear to have made some progress in their drive towards the Black Sea coast, the Russian armies are intact and are still resisting. The full weight of the German attack is directed against the Ukraine. The last two Russian communiques give no support to Germany’s sweeping claims, stating that nothing of importance took place yesterday and last night. The Germans report new successes in the Ukraine, pressure in the Smolensk sector and Russian counter-attacks in Estonia. The danger of the German drive in the Ukraine is fully realised in London. In Berlin rumour has it that Odessa has already fallen, but there is no official confirmation of this from either side. The main body of the Russian forces appeals to be intact. The Germans speak of pursuing the Russians and inflicting losses on the rearguard when it can be brought to action. . . Last night it was confidently predicted m Moscow that Russia would be able to hold the industrial portion of the Ukraine. Where farm lands had been abandoned, the scorched earth policy would leave the Germans nothing. The Russian Air Force continues to batter German troops and aircraft. Three German planes were brought down when they attempted to raid Leningrad. Thanks to the Russian fighter pilots, not a single German plane has reached or bombed Leningrad. The Germans claim to have again raided Moscow, but an official Russian statement says the planes were dispersed before reaching the capital. It is stated that when the Russians destroyed the great bridge over the Danube between Constanta and the interior of Rumania, the oil pipe line was carried away with it.
