LIME SUPPLIES
PETITION FROM TINUI DISTRICTS LOCAL FACILITIES WANTED. CONSIDERED BY MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL. A petition signed by 53 Uriti, Wharcama and Tinui settlers, asking the council to consider the question of better lime facilities for these districts was presented to the monthly meeting yesterday of the Masterton County Council. The petition suggested that if the council acquired a certain section of two and a half acres of land at Bennett's Hill, the present high cost of lime to farmers in these districts would be reduced by at least 50 per cent. The chairman, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee said that Mr Lamont, of the Agriculture Department, had taken samples of the lime mentioned and the analyst's report was awaited. The matter, Mr Lee said, deserved investigation and consideration. Councillor P. R. Welch: “This is a big job if we are going to enter into the lime business.” The clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, said the council had power under the Counties Act to acquire liming facilities at its discretion. Councillor George Moore said the petition had the unanimous and most enthusiastic support of the district concerned. The demand for lime there was acute and the district was being held back by the exhorbitantly high cost 1 of it. 1 Councillor H. H. Mawley said that 1 the first step was for the settlers to put a definite proposal before the council, and on his motion it was decided to suggest that a petitioners' committee be formed to discuss with the county clerk, the framing of a more exact proposition.
