PATENT ABSURDITY
ALLEGED STATEMENT BV BEAVERBROOK REGARDING AMERICAN TROOPS. MR CORDELL HULL REPLIES TO QUESTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 12. Mr Cordell Hull (Secretary of State) was questioned regarding a statement made to the Press by Representative Shafer, who alleged that Lord Beaverbrook had declared recently that unless the United States got. troops into the war within a month, Britain would sue for peace. (Mr Shafer declined to disclose the source of this allegation or to elaborate upon it).
Mr. Hull said he did not feel called upon to speak for Lord Beaverbrook, especially on something which was a patent absurdity on its face.
