EFFORTS TO REACH ODESSA AND LENINGRAD
Conflict on Great Scale in Ukraine ADDITIONAL GERMAN DIVISIONS THROWN IN CONTINUED AIR RAIDS ON BERLIN AND MOSCOW LONDON, August IL Germany’s third offensive against Russia is directed towards Leningrad and Odessa. The full weight of the Nazi land and air forces has been thrown into the drive in the Ukraine. The Russians report fighting between Kiev and Odessa and the Germans claim to be making rapid progress between the Dneiper and the Dniester. The threat is aimed at the Black Sea coast, but there is no sign of a break in the Russian resistance. It is stated that the most important fighting is taking place 150 miles north of Odessa. More German divisions than ever before have been thrown into the onslaught. Today’s German communique again says that operations are going according to plan. A Russian communique reports fighting round Smolensk and in the Estonian sector. Between Leningrad and Smolensk fighting took place yesterday 100 miles from Leningrad. The Germans claim successes in this area, but there is no confirmation from Moscow. Further north there is no fresh news about the fighting. The Russian Air Force is still delivering blows on enemy Panzer troops and infantry. Berlin was bombed again last night and many incendiary and high explosive bombs were dropped on military objectives. Large fires were started. All except one of the Russian aircraft returned safely. The Germans lost five planes in last night’s raid on Moscow, making 20 in the last 36 hours.
