ATTEMPTED ATTACK
BV ITALIANS AT TOBRUK DEFEATED WITH SLAUGHTER. WIDESPREAD R.A.F. RAIDS. LONDON, August 11. An attempted attack by Italians on a post in the outer ring of the defences of Tobruk ended disastrously for them. They were allowed to get within 300 yards of the post before the artillery opened fire and wiped them out almost to a man. The R.A.F. has attacked various targets in Cyrenaica to within 120 miles of Tripoli and off the coast of Sicily a large cargo vessel was torpedoed and other damage done. No planes were lost. A Cairo headquarters communique reporting the above action also states: ••In the frontier areas yesterday our patrols successfully engaged patrols of hostile armoured fighting vehicles, which subsequently were forced to withdraw by the accuracy of our artillery fire.”
