MADE BY THE UNITED STATES TO JAPAN
Statement by Mr Cordell Hull LONG MEETING OF AUSTRALIAN CABINET CONSULTATION WITH CHIEFS OF FIGHTING SERVICES LONDON. August 11. Mr Cordell Hull, United States Secretary of State, has promptly denied reports that the United States had offered a plan of settlement to Japan, involving certain concessions to Japan if she withdrew from the Axis. He added that any settlement of American and Japanese difficulties would have to be based on all the difficulties which the United States had enunciated for years. J The Bangkok radio warning against any act of aggression and a statement that the Thailand Government has sent reinforcements to the Indo-China frontier have caused speculation throughout the Far East. A radio announcer stated that the people of Thailand would die to the last man rather than surrender their freedom. A message from Tokio states that Japan is being fully mobilised on a war footing. A special meeting of the Australian Cabinet lasted tor twelve hours. The chiefs of the fighting services were called into consultation. The Federal Prime Minister (Mr E. G. Menzies) is to confer with the Leader of the Opposition (Mr J. Curtin).
