Mr W. Jones and Mr H. R. Fallwell, of Hamilton, are at present visiting the Wairarapa district. Mr C. G. White was re-elected president of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association at the ' annual general meeting last night.
Sergeant E. J. Carle, N.Z.T.S., Palmerston North military camp, and formerly of Masterton, visited Hamilton over the weekend for the Carle-Reese wedding.
Mr H. B. Massey, formerly of the staff of Wairarapa High School, and coach of the first cricket eleven there for many years, represented the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in a cricket match recently, played against the Gezira Sporting Club at Gezira, Egypt. Mr Frank Milner is to resign from the position of rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School from the end 'pf this year and his resignation has been accepted with regret by the Waitaki High School Board of Governors. Mr Milner, who has been rector of the school since 1906, will stand as the National candidate for Oamaru at the general election. Mr James Joseph Cooper celebrated his 100th birthday on Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs G. Vazey, Onehunga. He has lived in New Zealand for 78 years. According to his own estimate, he should have been 101 on Saturday, but recent receipt of his birth certificate shows that he was born in Cromer, Norfolk, on August 9, 1841.
A former Minister of Railways, Mr W. A. Veitch, is one of the three candidates seeking nomination as the official National Party candidate for the Wanganui electorate. One of the others is a woman, Mrs A. K. Maclean, who has taken a leading part in women’s activities. The third nominee is Mr N. M. Izard, barrister and solicitor. A postal ballot is being taken. The appointment of Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., as Director-General of the Home Guard, is announced. General Young has held the appointment of Dominion commander since the Home Guard was inaugurated in 1940, and he now vacates this appointment for the new one of Director-General, which carries with it the rank of brigadier.
The territorial commander of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, Lieu-tenant-Commissioner J. Evan Smith, has been promoted to the full rank of commissioner. The chief secretary, Lieutenant-Colonel W. A. Ebbs, has been promoted to colonel. This information was received at the territorial headquarters, Wellington, last evening. from General George L. Carpenter, London,
The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Mi’ Isadore J. Rothschild, in his 93rd year. Mr Rothschild, a well-known jeweller, was one of the oldest Freemasons in New Zealand. Fie was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Commercial Travellers’ Club, and a life member of the Midland Club, Christchurch. Mrs Rothschild died in November. 1937. He is survived by one son, Mr L. C. Rothschild. Wellington, and two daughters, Mrs F. H. Pope, Wellington, and Mrs B. J. Isaacs, Melbourne.
