LATE SIR G. SHIRTCLIFFE
PUBLIC BEQUESTS. PAINTING BEQUEATHED TO SPEAKER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Probate has been granted of the will of the late Sir George Shirtcliffe, Wellington. It was announced yesterday that an oil painting of the members of the National Cabinet in the Great War, by the late W. A. Bowring, a New Zealand artist of distinction, has been bequeathed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The inference is that this fine painting will be hung somewhere in the halls of legislature. The will makes provision for the payment of certain bequests to public and semi-public institutions, but as these were all paid during the lifetime of Sir George they are automatically revoked by a codicil. They include the £5OOO for children's playgrounds and equipment in them in Wellington; £5OOO for the religious, charitable and educational activities of the Wellington Diocesan Board; £lOOO to be a capital fund, the income of which shall be paid each year to the churchwardens of St. Paul's parish i.to be used for church purposes); £BOOO to the board of trustees of the Wellington Anglican Cathedral Fund; £5OO to St. Mary’s Guild (Anglican home for women and girls); £5OO to the Wellington Diocesan Board (for Missions to Seamen); £250 for the Plunket Society; £2OO to the Y.M.C.A.; and £2OO for the Y.W.C.A.
