WAIRARAPA UNION CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIONS. EASY WIN FOR CARTERTON. With Carterton in an unassailable position at the top of the champion- ( ship ladder, public interest ,in the j Wairarapa Rugby Union's senior com- ] petition has lessened considerably. At \ Memorial Park on Saturday, only a t handful of spectators saw the match 1 between the t two Masterton senior teams, Masterton and Red Star. The 1 standard of play in this game de- i cidedly was not high though condi- >. tions were ideal; the ground was in < good order, the ball was dry and there 1 was no wind. I i SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP DRAB GAME AT MEMORIAL j PARK. J ( MASTERTON DEFEAT RED STAR. f Showing stronger staying power as a team and more determination individ- I ually, Masterton defeated Red Star by < 13 points to 3 in the senior game at 1 Memorial Park. There was little be- I tween the teams and Red Star were J not overshadowed to such an extent J as the score might suggest. For the i most part a tussle between evenly- 1 matched forwards, the game was uninteresting to the spectator and hardly ! in keeping with the livelier form shown by these teams earlier in the season, i Team-work was weak on both sides, i The tries, without exception, were virtually solo efforts and at least two of them would not have been scored had tackling been stronger. High tackling which was easily wriggled out of gave the spectator a laugh or two. Two very good Masterton conversions! from difficult angles by H. Ewington and H. Tilyard were the bright' spots of the match. For Masterton tries were scored by F. Morris (converted by Ewington), M. Batty and J. O'Brien (converted by Tilyard). N. Harding scored for Red Star. Mr H. Reid was the referee. Asked what he thought was the feature of the game, an Edinburgh University representative told a “TimesAge” reporter that he did not think this match was one to judge Masterton Rugby by. He said individual players at times showed merit but there seemed to be a lack of combination and finish. “I don’t think,” he said, “the ‘high’ tackling was in keeping with the standard set by the All Blacks I saw play in Scotland.” CARTERTON V. GREYTOWN REID CUP CONTEST. Splendid weather prevailed for the i Reid Cup .game between Carterton and | Greytown played on the Carterton | showgrounds on Saturday before a fair I attendance of the public. Both side r I fielded good teams but on the day the I holders of the Cup, Carterton, were easily the better combination. Two I minutes after the start of the game G. I Udy scored in the corner from a passing rush. Hurley failed with the kick. ' Soon after Martin Parker evened the score with a penalty goal for Greytown. Just before the call of time Desmond, by fast following up scored. Jensen failed to add the major points and the spell ended 6 —3 in favour of Carterton. In the second spell Carterton added a further 15 points by good passing and concerted action. Tries were scored by Bush, Walker and Te Whaiti, Jensen converting the latter, while Hurley potted, a goal. Carterton dominated the scrums, but the line-outs were evenly contested. Mr W. Grantham was referee. After the game Mr Norman Reid, of Wellington, congratulated the Carterton team on retaining the cup after a good game, full of merit. Mr C. Jensen, captain of the Carterton team accepted the cup on behalf of his team and thanked Mr Reid for his kindly remarks. GLADSTONE v. FEATHERSTON, FAST, OPEN GAME. In a fast, open game at Gladstone, the home team defeated Featherston by 9 points to 6. The match was even and hard-fought and until the last, the result might have been a win for. Featherston. Gladstone’s one try was scored by G. Colquhoun and their two penalties by R. Compton. Morris and Mahupuka scored a try each for Featherston. WAIRARAPA V. WELLINGTON MATCH ON SATURDAY NEXT. Canterbury v Otago. —Canterbury broke Otago’s long winning sequence at Rugby on the Carisbrook ground, Dunedin, on Saturday, when for the first time since their 26-13 win in 1926, the Christchurch players beat Otago Blues at home. Canterbury’s winning margin of 11-10 was well merited, though Otago's late run nearly pulled the game from the fire. Canterbury scored three times and Otago one, the remainder of the home team s score coming from a penalty goal and a field goal. Buller v West Coast—A sensational turn was given to the return match on Saturday between Buller and West Coast, when, in the second spell, Ron King, former All Black and captain of the West Coast team, was ordered off the ground for disputing the decision of the referee when Buller scored its first try. The game was won by Buller by 6 points to 3. Win for Taranaki—Lasting out a hard game on a slippery ground, the Taranaki Rugby representatives scored a well-deserved win against Wanganui, 11-3.
