VICHY SURRENDER
PREDICTED BY AMERICAN CORRESPONDENT AGREEMENT WITH GERMANY AGAINST RUSSIA. DEMAND FOR AFRICAN BASES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, August 10. If it has not already done so, the Vichy Government is on the point of signing an offensive and defensive agreement with Germany against Russia, declares the “New York Times” correspondent,' Daniel Brigham, from Switzerland. Though the agreement provides for the eventual shipment of French soldiers to the east front, it will at present be confined to increasing-French deliveries of war material to Germany in return for Reich promises to release certain classes of prisoners. Germany, Mr Brigham adds may also agree to retire from Paris, but this is contingent on Vichy’s granting bases at Dakar and Casablanca. The agreement originated with M. Laval and Admiral Darlan and it is believed they have forced it through, despite the opposition of General Weygand and certain members of the Vichy Cabinet.
