OUTLAY ON WORKS

CUT DOWN IN AUSTRALIA' TOTAL OF £20,000,000. INCLUDING EXPENDITURE BY LOCAL BODIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Loan Council has decided to limit the Public Works programme for the Commonwealth and States in 1941/42 to £20,000,000. This total includes Governmental, semi-Govern-mental and local authorities’ works. It compares with an outlay of £24,713,980 recommended by the Co-ordinator-General of Works. Sir Harry Brown. The New South Wales Premier, Mr McKell, fought to retain Sir H. Brown's recommendation, which was much less than the original claims by the States. Mr McKell urged an extension of bank credit to finance additional public works and health and education services.
