ACT OF REPRISAL
FOR VICHY BAD FAITH IN SYRIA BRITISH & INDIAN OFFICERS NOT ACCOUNTED FOR. GENERAL DENTZ AND OTHERS INTERNED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, August 8. It is officially announced at Beirut that General Dentz (who commanded the Vichy forces in Syria) and 35 Vichy officers have been interned because 75 British and Indian officers who were captured during the Syrian campaign are still not accounted for. It is believed that Vichy pilots flew these officers to Greece and handed them over to the Germans. It is reported that even while General Dentz was initialling the terms of the Syrian armistice, Allied prisoners were being taken to Axis territories. It is understood that those taken include officers from the Royal Fusiliers who were captured at El Quenitra. Despite Vichy’s bad faith, the repatriation of the Vichy forces is proceeding. Several thousands have left since the detention of General Dentz.
