SOLWAY-MANAIA. SIXTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Solway-Manaia Women’s Institute celebrated its sixth birthday on Thursday. Mrs Diamond presided and welcomed a large number of members and friends. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Hiddlestone and Miss McAlister. The roll call, “A Newly-weds’ Catastrophe,” brought forth some splendid stories and also a good collection of pennies. The following are the points prize winners for the year:—Flowers, Mrs Carr. 29 points; sewing, Mrs Munn; cooking. Mrs Diamond; most entries, Mrs Carr (31 entries). The potato competition was won by Mrs Taylforth. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Mrs Munn, in appreciation of her services while she was president of the Institute. A baby’s money box was presented to Mrs Pedersen. The following members of the committee were handed shoulder sprays:— Mesdames Diamond, Woollett, Henderson, Webber, Reynolds, Munn, Groombridge, Church, Carman, Scrivener, McGovern and Miss Russell. Miss Cocks-Johnston gave a talk on the production of fruit and vegetables. A field day is to bo held at the home of Mrs Reynolds Lansdowne, on August 27. An address on “Personal Values” was given by the Ven. Archdeacon Rich, and was much appreciated. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served, and a brithday cake, kindly donated by Mrs Webber and iced and decorated by Mrs Butler, was much admired. Mrs Butler was presented with a shoulder spray. The hostesses for September will be Mesdames Sutherland, Taylforth, Thompson and Webber. The programme will be: —Cooking, ginger gems; winter knitting; flowers, best collection of spring flowers, best bloom; roll call, “The Oldest Cup and Its History.” TE ORE ORE MEETING. BALACLAVA COMPETITION. c“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Te Ore Ore Women’s Institute the president (Mrs Mcßae) presided over a fair attendance of members. A. motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Dring in her bereavement. Articles for a soldier’s parcel were collected and packed. The competition for knitted balaclavas resulted in fourteen being contributed, the .winner being Mrs Te Tau, with Mrs McDonald second and Mrs McLaughlan third. A. very interesting reading was given by Mrs McDonald. 1 The making of wool quilts was demonstrated by Miss Tankersley. For the August meeting it was decided that the competition should be for a tin of ginger biscuits to be used for soldiers’ parcels.
