MADE BY GERMANS IN UKRAINE

Success Claimed South of Kiev HOLD-UP ON ALL MAIN SECTORS ACCORDING TO SOVIET COMMUNIQUE LONDON, August 8. Today’s Russian communique gives an indication that the Germans are held up on all the main sectors of the Eastern front, with fierce fighting going on in the Ukraine. An unofficial Russian report states that the 20th German Tank Division has been destroyed. On the Finnish front there is no news of the German thrust towards Murmansk. Further south the Russians report fierce fighting on the western shores of Lake Ladoga. The Germans and Finns announce successful progress but no detailed claims are mij'&e. In Estonia the Russians report continued fighting and the Germans claim once more to have reached the Gulf of Finland. In the central sector, fighting is still going on round Smolensk, where it appears the German thrust is being held. The Germans make no mention of this sector today. The Ukraine seems to be the scene of the most important fig*hting at present. Kiev is, still in Russian hands. The Germans claim a big success south of Kiev. There are indications that the Germans are anxious about their losses on the Eastern front. They had planned to surround Kiev with a small force and take the city with a minimum of losses. The Germans may be pushing south towards the Black Sea in order to isolate Odessa. In the Ukraine, the Hungarians also claim successes.

• . The Russian Air Force continues to pound enemy communications, mechanised units, infantry and grounded aircraft.
