Mrs Harrington and Miss Smart will be in charge of the afternoon tea. REW & McCRACKEN CUP. The Carterton ladies defeated Riverside in a game for the Rew & McCracken Cup. The following were the scores, Riverside players mentioned first in each instance:—Mrs Clark lost to Mrs Candy; Mrs Brown lost to Mrs Moroney; Mrs Jones beat Mrs Harrington; Mrs Palamontain lost to Mrs Colson; Mrs Naan beat Mrs Murray; Mrs Wakelin lost to Mrs Johansen; Mrs Gilliland beat Mrs Robinson; Miss Norman lost to Mrs Forbes; Mrs Blatchford lost to Miss J. Booth; Mrs Skeet beat Miss Lawrence; Mrs Clark beat Mrs Knowles.
DAIRY INDUSTRY OPENING OF SEASON. The amount of milk delivered to the three factories which this week commenced operations for the season suggests that there will be a record output of cheese at these factories this season. The Parkvale cheese factory, which opened for the season on Monday, received 650 gallons of milk. The factory will be open on alternate days for a short period. The manager reports that there was an increase of about 100 gallons of milk as compared with the opening period of the last seajtfn. At Dalefield on Tuesday 640 gallons of milk were received and yesterday this quantity had increased to 750 gallons. This is about the same quantity as was received at the corresponding period last season. The Waihakeke factory opened on Tuesday, a week earlier than usual, with 360 gallons of milk. The factory will run on alternate days for a short period.
RED CROSS SOCIETY TRANSPORT examination. About 23 women connected with the Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society’s Transport Section, on Monday evening sat ' for an examination in their work, which consisted of the general working of a motor engine, repairs and maintenance. The examination has extended over a course of 13 lectures. Beside these lectures the members of the class have attended a number of extra lectures in the classroom in theory and practical work on vehicles. In addition they have had convoy runs in conjunction with the Home Guard and lessons in the driving of big trucks lent by the Wairarapa South County Council. The transport commandant is Mrs L. J. Fairbrother, who has been ably assisted by Mrs W. Moroney. The examination papers have been sent to the Institute of Automotive Engineers, Wellington, for scrutiny, and the result will shortly be made known to the class.
, OBITUARY MRS AMELIA BLADE. A pioneer settler, Mrs Amelia Blade, relict of Mr Robert Emery Blade, died at Auckland yesterday morning at the age of 90 years. Born at Lower Hud on February 21. 1851, deceased came to the Wairarapa when a child of five years, her first home being at Tauherenikau in the little cottage on the triangle near the Tauherenikau Hotel. At the age of 19 years she married the late Mr Robert Emery Blade, who was, in those early days, a transport carrier between Wellington and Masterton. The late Mrs Blade, who was the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Arthur Hayward, also resided with her husband at Kopuaranga and Carterton -and after her husbands death she lived in Palmerston North for a time and then with her daughter, Mrs Deadman, at Featherston. Five years ago she left for Auckland to reside with another daughter, Mrs Dew, of Auckland. Her husband predeceased her 16 years ago. Deceased is survived by four sons and seven daughters. The daughters arc Mrs H. J. Deadman, Featherston; Mrs Falconer, Tuakau; Mrs F. M. Dew, Auckland; Mrs T. A. Weston, Ihuraua; Mrs M. Deadman, Waverley; Mrs W. Hawkless, Taumarunui; Miss Ella Blade, Palmerston North, and the sons Messrs John Emery Blade, Auckland; Arthur Edward Blade, Auckland; Hugh Robert Blade, Carterton, and Harry Hayward Blade, Waikato. Two other members of the family died when infants. She leaves over 100 descendants. The
funeral will take place at the Featherston Cemetery tomorrow, after the arrival of the hearse at 2.30 o’clock. Boy Scouts. The weekly card tourney held by the Boy Scout Committee in the band room last evening was well attended. The prizes were won as follow: Ladies, Mr Daysh 1, Mrs O’Halloran 2. Men: Mr K. Hodder 1. C. Ammundsen 2. Dance at Dalefield. Pilot Officer Trevor Smith will be entertained at a dance in the Dalefield. Hall tonight, and a presentation will be made to him *by the residents of the district. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs A. McPhee. Clifton Avenue, who have been spending a holiday in Auckland, have returned to Carterton. Mrs C. -E. Thomas, • of Palmerston North, is a visitor to Kokotau and is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Scott. Mr J. M. Nichols, who has been caretaker at the Carterton racecourse for a number of years, has resigned and has taken up a position at the Wairarapa Training Farm at East Taratahi.
