Renewed Thrusts in North and South MORE EXCUSES BY NAZI HIGH COMMAND INDIFFERENCE TO TIME FACTOR ALLEGED LONDON. August 5. There are few details of the operations on the Eastern battlefront tonight. The situation may be broadly summed up as follows: A deadlock has been reached in the central sector round Smolensk, where the German drive towards Moscow has been halted by fierce Rcssian resistance. Renewed German thrusts in the north towards Leningrad and in the south against Kiev are reported. Stubborn fighting by the Russians continues on all fronts. The Germans continue to make excuses to account tor their lack of progress. The High Command, it is stated, is not much concerned over the time needed for the extermination of the Russians. A report from. Ankara quotes a German statement that final victory cannot be expected until next spring. Knowledge is still lacking as to the magnitude of Russia s reserves.
