LABOUR
QUESTION OF IMPRESSING NO ACTION IN MEANTIME, PRODUCTION COUNCIL’S DECISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 4. Advice that the National Council of Primary Production was not taking steps in the meantime to deal with the question of impressing farm labour was received at today’s meeting of the Auckland council. “There is an enormous amount of male labour working in places where it is not necessary. Female labour is also not being used in the right places,” said Colonel N. P. Adams. The chairman, Mr R. C. Clark: “Where is it?” “In corset factories, for one thing,” replied Colonel Adams, adding that women capable of making corsets were capable of doing more essential work, for instance in uniform factories. He said the only way to get farm labour was by action. Dairy factories were not going to appeal for any more single men. Girls could do good work in these factories if allowed. In a few weeks farm labour would be wanted urgently. The meeting decided to reply to the national council stating that the question was so important that the Auckland council regretted the delay in taking it up. Attention was drawn to the large number of newspaper advertisements seeking farm labour.
