HARRIER ACTIVITIES
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
HELD AT LYALL BAY ON SATURDAY.
KIATERE CLUB PARTICIPATES.
(“Times-Age” Special.)
Members of the Kiatcre Harrier Club journeyed to Lyall Bay on Saturday to compete in the Wellington provincial championships. The runners did not find the start along the beach to their liking, but in the circumstances gave a good performance, especially the juniors.
N. Dickel was the first Kiatcre junior home, in 12th place, and ran a splendid race. This harrier should develop into a fine long-distance runner. G. Hayes ran his usual consistent race, finishing just behind Dickel. N. Jacobsen, the No. 1 junior, unfortunately caught a cold, which definitely affected his performance. With more experience he should soon show his worth in good company. S. Pickett was the fourth junior home.
In the team’s event the junior team was placed fifth, which was indeed a worthy effort, especially in view of the fact that they were by far the youngest team in the field.
The senior team ran up to their usual form, but were unfortunate in not having W. Burgess and R. Greeks available for the team. W. MacDonald ran a very solid race, and finished well up in the field. He proved a groat help to the rest of the team, and brought them along in a true captain's style. L. Francis finished about seven places behind MacDonald, and ran a good race. W. Teahan was close to Francis, and went very well indeed, especially in the early stages of the race. H. MacDonald was fourth man in, and considering that he has not raced for several weeks, performed well. The senior team was placed ninth in the teams’ event. Next week a teams’ relay race is to be held by the Kiatcre harriers, starting from the Solway Showgrounds at 2.30 p.m. TEAMS RACE TO SCOTTISH. JUNIOR RACE WON BY PARKINSON. . The Masterton Harrier Club's junior members travelled to Lyall Bay on Saturday where they competed in the Wellington Junior Cross Country championships. The course, which was quite an arduous one, thoroughly tested all Wairarapa runners. With the first thousand yards run on the beach, with the tide half-way out. and a heavy cross-wind blowing, Parkinson, the ultimate winner, a tall thin type of harrier, immediately went to the lead. Going off the beach he had a considerable lead, and was only seriously threatened on the homeward journey once, with about a half-mile to go. He won comfortably. The first Masterton man home was M. Dojde, whose performance was not his best by any means. He finished 11th. Then followed Peter Greenlees in 14th place. He had a bad position early in the race, but battled on gamely at the finish. Both Wickens and Cairns had poor positions going off the beach and were never able to improve, finishing wellback. The trip did much to give the team experience, although running on the beach and through the sandhills sorely tried the juniors. It is a pity that local harriers could not obtain more experience in running on sand, for quite a number of races run by the local team in other centres, are held on sandy courses. In the senior race Bartlett again proved the adage, “the old dog for the hard road.” He was always in the front, and when the course was at its toughest, he went away from the opposition to win comfortably. In the senior team's race the Scottish Club, the holders of. the championship, had little difficulty in retaining their position. The club, although always a strong one. is perhaps a little lucky in being strong numerically, for it now has quite a number of married men to fall back on, and this section of their club played a big part in winning the teams’ race on Saturday.
