NEW GERMAN DEMANDS
CONTROL OF NORTH-WEST AFRICA. . • LONDON, August 2. Germany has apparently created a fresh crisis in Vichy over the question of French bases in North-west Africa. The German controlled Paris radio today stressed the United States’ “designs” on French North-west Africa, and Germany is reported to be demanding control of these bases from Vichy.
Some reports reaching New York say that an ultimatum was delivered last week to Vichy by the Germans. A meeting of the Vichy Cabinet was held yesterday, and the • New York message says the German requests were refused by Marshal Petain and General Weygand. There is no confirmation of these reports, but the attack on Vichy by the German-controlled Paris radio indicates that fresh demands." are being pressed.
