Mr S. K. Siddells, of Pahiatua, has volunteered for service with the 2nd Battalion, Hawke’s Bay Regiment, and has proceeded to Waiouru Camp for three months’ intensive training. According io private ac'vice received in Masterton this morning, Corporal A. M. Kjar, son of Mr L. Kjar, of Masterton, was fit and well when he was last seen in Crete. He is believed to be a prisoner of war. The Rt Hon J. G. Coates, a member of the Wai- Cabinet who has just completed a Government mission to the United States and Canada for defence material, arrived in Wellington by the Limited express today.

Superintendent S. Rawle, of the Christchurch Police Force and formerly of Greytown, will retire on October 10. Mr Rawle has been 42 years in the Police Force, and has served in many parts of New Zealand. Two and a half years ago he took over the office of Superintendent A. Cameron at Christchurch. The death is announced in a Press Association telegram from Gore of Mr Andrew Martin, who had given outstanding service on public bodies and institutions over a long period of years. He was associated with many Southland organisations and held records of lengthy service. He was mayor of Gore for a term, and a foundation member of the fire brigade and Early Settlers’ Association. The death occurred on Saturday of the well-known Manawatu Golf Club professional, Mr J. R. Galloway. He had been away from Palmerston North for about a fortnight, and it was while he was visiting his son, Mr T. S. Galloway, the professional of the Rotorua Club, that he became ill and his death occurred. Mr Galloway came to New Zealand from the Loch Leven Club, Fifeshire, Scotland. He was a regular contender at New Zealand championship tournaments, and in 1935 reached the semifinals of the professional event, being eliminated on that occasion by A. J. Shaw.
