JAPANESE LINER
HELI) AT SAN FRANCISCO
CLAIMS TO POSSESSION OF CARGO.
CHARGES OF CURRENCY SMUGGLING.
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, August 1.
The departure of the Japanese liner Tatuta Marti received an unexpected check when importers filed libel actions, seeking possession of valuable cargo, which includes 2,500,000 dollars worth of silk. On top of that, millions of dollars of contraband United States currency had been smuggled abroad. Customs agents began opening every safe and deposit box and searching every stateroom of the Tatuta Maru, with a large list of anxious passengers. The ship had hovered off the coast for six days before docking, until they received an assurance that the Customs Department would grant a clearance, but the ship’s movements are now in' the hands of the Justice Department.
