SMOLENSK BATTLE
POWERFUL RUSSIAN COUNTERATTACKS ENEMY HURLED BACK WITH HEAVY LOSSES. TOWN STILL HELD BY SOVIET. LONDON. July 31. The latest news of the great Battle of Smolensk is given in a new Russian communique, which reports that especially stubborn fighting is taking place round Smolensk. Russian troops launched counter-attacks, hurling back the enemy with heavy losses. The Germans report Russian infantry and tank attacks in the Smolensk sector and claim to have repulsed them. The Russians say that the Germans have made 42 attacks against the town of Smolensk and every one of these assaults has been repelled. The Russians l are still holding the town. SOME GERMAN CLAIMS (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) LONDON. July 31. Today’s German communique says: “German forces have penetrated deeply into the lines of the retreating enemy in the Ukraine. “The encirclement of the enemy east of Smolensk has been drawn closer. Units in Estonia have thrust the enemy back.”
