ENEMY ATTACK
DRIVEN OFF BY GUNS AT TOBRUK ITALIAN PLANE CAPTURED. VICHY ARTILLERY SURRENDERED IN SYRIA. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, July 31. A Cairo headquarters communique states: “During yesterday afternoon the enemy attacked one of our forward observation points at the junction of the perimeter south-east of Tobruk. They were driven off by artillery fire and left one wounded man in our hands. During the night our patrolling activity continued, but no contact was made with the enemy. “In the frontier area an Italian fighter made a forced landing and the pilot surrendered. “The Vichy forces in Syria have nowhanded over all field artillery and fixed guns to the Allied troops.
