WHEAT GROWING
INCREASED AVERAGE NEEDED IN WAIRARAPA FAIR RESPONSE ALREADY ASSURED. WINTER & SPRING SOWINGS. “It would appear from reports received from vendors that a good response is already promised to the request that the Wairarapa district's normal wheat acreage should be doubled this season,” states the Masterton Primary Production Council. “It was, however, unfortunate that the appeal came rather late to influence winter sowings with the result that the normal spring area will have to be much more than doubled to make good the quota. It is interesting to note that in the 1933-34 season nearly 1700 acres of wheat were grown in this district although cur average over a big number of years has been only about 1000 acres. There is no doubt whatsoever that this district could grow very much more wheat —we may have to grow more if the meat situation should deteriorate further —and could easily sow more than the 2250 acres asked without serious repercussions upon our farming organisation. • “As pointed out previously, on the ether hand, we can only attain to the desired increase if everyone who possibly can, makes an effort to put in an area this spring and the total will never be reached by leaving it to one's neighbour." .
