GIVING WAY TO TRENCH WARFARE
On the Soviet-German Front ACCORDING TO BRITISH CORRESPONDENTS RUSSIANS BETTER ABLE TO FACE NEW CONDITIONS (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.),, LONDON, July 30. British correspondents agree that blitzkreig’ methods on the Russian-German front are giving way to trench warfare of a more orthodox kind. Correspondents believe that the Russians are better able to face protracted trench warfare than the Germans, as they have an almost inexhaustible supply of manpower and the time factor would favour the defenders. A Finnish communique claims that Finnish troops have occupied in a fortnight territory eastwards from Lake Ladoga greater than the Russians captured in 1939. It adds. We have taken the north-east coast of Lake Ladoga as far as Taulos, which is 20 miles north-west of Olonez, as well as two railways on Lake Ladoga’s north-west coast. The enemy attempted to disembark troops to retake the railways, but was repulsed and left nearly a thousand dead.
