RED CROSS

COUNTRY DISTRICTS SUB-CENTRE HOME NURSING CLASSES. PASSES IN FIRST AID EXAMINATION. There was a large attendance of workers at the bi-monthly meeting of the Country Districts sub-centre of the Red Cross Society held yesterday at the Country Women’s Club Room. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr T. Verity. It was noted with much pleasure that Mrs W. James had been elected president of the Registered Nurses’ Association. A long discussion followed about giving assistance to soldiers returning from overseas and on a proposal to provide extras for teas for soldiers in hospital. The matter of arranging to get the regulation garments to put in parcels for prisoners of war was brought before members. Mrs W. James, a member of the subcentre, had been appointed to represent the Wairarapa sub-centre at the annual meeting' of the Dominion Council of the Red Cross Society. An expression of thanks was received from Trentham Camp for books sent to the camp. The following donors were thanked: Mr N. Bubb for black fleece; Mr I. Allen, for timber; Wangaehu knitters; Kopuaranga Institute, parcel of clothing, and several parcels from the Opaki Institute and Tinui district workers. It was decided to hold a shop day on the last Wednesday in September, also a bridge party on a date to be arranged. The first aid classes, it was reported, had been in progress some time and eighteen members stood for the examinations. All succeeded in passing: Maisie Wright, Monica Welch, Margie Reader, Ida Christensen and Mary James all receiving honours. The others who passed were: Julia Bubb, Nell Bubb, Elsie Bubb, Annie Bubb, Janet Palmer, Eileen McKenzie, Doris Skeet, Yolande Ruby, Margaret Clarke, Rebecca Westland, Flora J arret, Annie Clarke and Mary Cooper. , Home nursing classes' would begin next Wednesday and it was hoped that any country members wishing to take the classes would attend. The classes would be held in the Country Women’s Club on Wednesdays, from 2 p.m. to 3, commencing on Wednesday next, August 6.
