SINISTER DESIGNS

GERMANS IN SOUTH AMERICA MILLION SOLDIERS READY. ACCORDING TO MR DIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) .WASHINGTON, July 29. The chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, Mr Dies, said: “Germany has a million soldiers in South America organised into companies and battalions and waiting for the psychological moment to produce a diversion to prevent our aiding Britain.” Mr Dies said reports from Berlin that his committee was responsible for the Argentine seizure of Gprman diplomatic pouches was partly true as he had personally issued a warning two years ago against infiltration. The Assistant Secretary of State, Mr Sumner Welles, ii\ a statement to the Press, said recent events emphasised the correctness of the charge that the totalitarian Powers were striving to disturb the peace of this hemisphere and extend their disruptive control over the American repuolics. Swift action by the Governments concerned had nipped dangerous plans in the bud and indicated the determination of the Americas to defend their integrity and peace. President Rooseyelt’s black list of the Axis-controlled firms was but another step in the blockading of sinister designs.
