ATTACK ON PRESS
MADE BY LABOUR MEMBER. LICENSING ADVOCATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “I think every newspaper in New Zealand should be licensed, and when it works against the interests of the people the licence should be cancelled,” said Mr O’Brien (Government, Westland). An Opposition member: “You mean when it works against the ment!”“A German plan,” said another Opposition member, when Mr O’Brien repeated his statement. “It is time something was done to get from the newspapers some measure of fairness in dealing with political parties and the people of the country,” said Mr O’Brien. When he said there was no free Press, Mr Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo) expressed agreement, adding: “The censorship is in your hands.” “Some of the honourable gentlemen opposite are complaining about the censorship,” said Mr O’Brien. “If I had my way I would let everything they say be published. It would kill them politically quicker than anything else.”
