PATHETIC PETAIN
OLD AND FAILING MAN.
TOOL IN HANDS OF OTHERS
The Free French are not a bit surprised at Vichy and its betrayal. After having warned their British friends to beware of Darlan and to watch Africa, they now prophesy that we are very soon going to see Laval in a new role.
Marshal Petain, the Free French point out, is an old man of 85 who for long past has given signs of weakening intellect of which everyone is aware except himself. He no doubt in a curious way believes he is doing what is right, unwilling to acknowledge to himself that he is but the poor tool in the hands of an ambitious man who in turn has sold himself entirely to the enemy. No other explanation is possible, say the Free French, for declarations that nothing forbidden by honour shall be done, while permission is given which will enable the Germans to attack us im Syria and elsewhere. All letters coming from France contain one message and that is an appeal to English people not to judge France, the real France, by Vichy, the radio or the newspapers, which do not represent France, as they are all at the mercy of the Germans, who exercise complete control in what is wronglycalled the “free zone.” •
