ARBOR DAY
GATHERING OF CHILDREN
CEREMONY AT SOLWAY SCHOOL.
PATRIOTIC WORK OF PUPILS
PRAISED.
The annual Arbor Day ceremony was held at the Solway School this morning, when there was a large attendance of the public as well as scholars. After verse speaking by the senior and junior pupils, the chairman, Mr McLauchlan, welcomed the visitors and thanked the Masterton Beautifying Society for its sympathetic and practical interest in the school, as evidenced by the gift of fifteen flowering apple trees. The committee was indebted to those who had carried out similar work at the school in the past. The policy of planting trees had resulted in the present school ground being a beauty spot. Mr McLauchlan said that he was very pleased with the contributions made by the pupils of Solway School towards the National Savings Fund. The sum had reached £3O, which was a very worthy effort. The school and the surrounding buildings .were kept in excellent order, with no sign of damage, showing a very fine spirit by the children in regard to the preservation of property. He said he would like to especially thank the children for their very practical co-operation in helping our country. The infant department, in charge or Miss O’Donnell, planted one of the flowering apple trees, and this was followed by groups of the remaining pupils planting the remainder of the trees. The Arbor Day ceremony was followed by a short social gathering, at which the children of the school made a presentation to Mr Turner, a teacher at the school, who is leaving to take up the position of first assistant at the Shannon School.
