34 ENEMY PLANES DESTROYED
MANY OTHERS DAMAGED.
LOADED SHIP LEFT SINKING IN MEDITERRANEAN.
LONDON, July 29. Thirty-four enemy planes were destroyed in a crippling attack by the R.A.F. on Italian air bases in Sicily. All the British planes returned safely. The bases attacked were in the coastal areas of Sicily. Besides the 34 planes destroyed, many others were badly damaged and a number of casualties were inflicted on aerodrome personnel. A Cairo communique, reporting this operation, stated also that bombers yesterday attacked a loaded enemy schocner in the Central Mediterranean and left it sinking. Another heavy raid was made on Benghazi and bombs dropped from a low level caused many fires and explosions. All these operations were carried out without loss to the R.A.F.
